Warren Clarke dies aged 67
The actor, best known for his television role in Dalzell and Pascoe, died yesterday. His death was a result of a short illness, his agent confirmed. Clarke starred in the 1971 film The Clockwork Orange as well as recently appearing in BBC dramas Call the Midwife and Down to Earth. Clarke, who was born in Oldham, will appear in his last ever television role in the BBC remake of Poldark, which is to be released next year. Celebrities took to twitter to pay tribute to Clarke including comic and fellow actor Jack Dee: "a brilliant, funny and generous man who was a joy to work with".

Survey reveals the most valuable books for humanity
The survey, conducted by YouGov, saw 2,044 British adult members of the public asked for their thoughts on significant books in modern life. Commissioned by the Folio society, participants were given a list of 30 books to choose from and were required to select three titles and their reasons for such choices. Within the top 10, the winner of the most significant book was the Bible with 37% of the public vote. Darwin's "Origin of Species" documenting the scientific theory of natural selection narrowly missed the top spot at 35%. Thus, the research demonstrated the continued influence of the dominant religious and scientific realms respectively.

A link between gardening and dementia
Dr William Bird, a government health advisor, has stated that GPs need to be more aware of the benefits of the great outdoors in the prevention and treatment of dementia. Such benefits are related to the stress-relieving qualities of engaging with nature such as gardening or a country run. Dr Bird argues that the stimulation of the senses touch, hearing and smell can be an effective form of therapy for dementia. He urged fellow doctors to acknowledge that such natural treatment can be more beneficial to dementia patients than the popular method of drugs. Outdoor activities can also positively contribute to physical health including reducing the risks of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Elvis Presley painting by Warhol sold for 82 million dollars
The 1963 painting of Elvis Presley known as "Triple Artist" sold for nearly 82 million dollars at auction. The auction took place last night at Christie's postwar and contemporary art sale in New York. The 7 foot tall silkscreen was originally a publicity image for the film "Flaming Star" and shows Presley as a cowboy with a gun. The painting, by artist Andy Warhol, topped the sales at the Wednesday night auction.

Andy Murray becomes an ambassador for WWF
Scottish tennis star Andy Murray has joined the wildlife charity WWF as an ambassador. Murray, with his well-known love for dogs, wanted to participate in the fight against illegal animal poaching after describing it as "shocking". The tennis player will raise funds to support a sniffer dog programme in Nepal to track poachers. One dog will be called Murray in tribute to the star. Andy Murray commented, "I think it's incredibly important that this trade is prevented and the sniffer dog programme seemed like the perfect venue for me to get behind. I know from my own dogs how clever they can be and it's fascinating how these sniffer dogs communicate with their handlers".
