The Daily: 6 September

A spritely grandmother returns to the runway

Grandmother Marion Finlayson has returned to the runway aged 80, over 60 years after she last stepped onto the catwalk. After a bout of teenage modelling in the 1940's, she decided to pursue a career as a teacher, but returned to the stage for the launch of the 50 Plus Festival in Aberdeen this week. She decided to revisit modelling following the death of her husband in 2010, choosing to focus on it as a way of coping with her grief. Marion has said how much more enjoyable it has been modelling at this stage of her life, having shed her nerves and grown in confidence over the years. She attributes her new-found bravery to her loving friends and family, and has recently travelled alone to Italy and Mauritius thanks to her confidence.

New parents hand out sweets to fellow passengers

A generous couple have found surprising internet fame after they handed out home-made gift packages on board a flight. Christina Diaz, 38, and Michael Rubinstein, 32, wrapped parcels of sweets and attached a note, explaining that their 14-week-old twin boys were travelling with them, and they wished to apologise in advance if the babies became disruptive during the flight. The thoughtful pair even brought packets of earplugs with them to hand out to fellow passengers. However, the efforts proved to be unnecessary as the twin boys, named Arrow and Jasper, stayed completely silent throughout the 5 hour flight.

Rodent round-up

Scientists have recently discovered that water voles are prepared to journey up to nine-miles to pursue their perfect mate, abandoning their families and traversing across treacherous ground for a companion. By travelling alone the voles risk falling prey to larger animals such as foxes, and when they find their territory, they create a new colony in anticipation of their partner. With only around 10 per cent of voles finding success, it seems they are prepared to risk their lives in search of their loved ones.

Neighbours in a rural hamlet near Bodmin Moor have rescued three young dormice this week, after the mice's mother was found dead just a meter away from her young. Upon hearing squeals in his garden, Geoff Brown alerted his neighbour who drove the endangered animals to a rescue centre, where three of them were saved. The survivors are being fed on honeysuckle, blackberries and chopped nuts, and will be released into the wild when they reach a healthy weight.

Chinese pensioner could be 127 years old

A lady in China has allegedly celebrated her 127th birthday, making her the oldest person ever to have lived by 5 years. Luo Meizhan was born on July 9 1885, and currently lives in Bama in China's Guangxi province with her son, who she reportedly gave birth to aged 61. The region has become renowned for the long lives of its residents, 74 of whom were centenarians in the 2000 census. The verified oldest lady alive is Besse Cooper from Georgia, who celebrated her 117th birthday last month, and stated that her secret to a long life was staying away from junk food.

Paralympics news

Yesterday saw the British team take on the U.S. in wheelchair rugby. The sport, which has been dubbed 'murderball' thanks to its ruthless nature, saw violent clashes and wheelchairs upended as the players collided with each other throughout the match. The British team eventually lost 56-44 to their U.S. rivals. Today, Beverley Jones has won bronze in the F37 discus, and Josef Craig smashed a world-record in his S7 400m Freestyle heat, making him the fastest qualifier for the final this evening. The Great British team have been overtaken by Russia to place them in third position in the overall medal standing, as they currently hold 25 gold, 36 silver and 32 bronze medals.
