Coco's corner: 22 June

Written by Coco
Dear Readers,

Well, at last. I have met Baxter. As senior dog in the relationship (did I mention that we are a godmother?) certain conventions were observed for our first meeting. First, I insisted that the Mates bought the new puppy to the Dawnay household, rather than all of us going to Bark Place. No matter that this meant that the Mates had to bring Baxter, a chew toy, kitchen towel and an enormous cage Mrs Mates has covered with a sort of handmade flouncy Cath Kidston doily-cum-valance in the family Volvo. We could have all just moseyed up the road to Bayswater, but that is not the point. Attention, and respect, must be paid.

So they arrived. The Dawnays were having people to supper and Baxter ruined the evening. It wasn't that he peed repeatedly over the floor and chairs while the ed in chief was trying to cook rice, a skill she has never mastered. No. As soon as Baxter arrived everyone forgot their drinks and conversation and simply competed to be the one to cuddle and romp with the exciting new toy. Grown men got down on the floor in the hope that Baxter would nip their hands and fight their shoelaces to the death. It was most pathetic. I made my feelings clear I hope by retiring to beddybies while the Baxter-worship roared on around me in the kitchen.

Finally, Baxter was put back in his cage. He lay there, flumped, in the position that Mrs Mates had left him, eyes shut, like a hairy, puppyshaped bean bag. While he was asleep I did think he was rather sweet but I would never dream of telling anyone.
