Coco's corner: 15 June

Written by Coco
Dear Readers,

I know you'll all want to know how Baxter the new puppy in Bark Place is settling down.

Well, I can only give you second-hand news because the first pup in the Dawnay litter has failed to take me to inspect the scrap. He has been home from university for a week and I don't think he's left the house yet. Every day his parents ask what he's been 'up to' and what his 'plans' are and he just grunts. So I haven't met Baxter, but I am his godmother.

As everyone knows, if you are very grand, as I am, you do not wait to be asked. When Mr Dawnay was born, for example, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wrote to Mrs Dawnay after her confinement. Her letter of congratulation concluded, 'Shall I be godmother?' But Mr Dawnay hates me mentioning this so let us revert to Baxter.

The ed in chief was at Bark Place in a trice, soon after the puppy's arrival, and spent an hour inspecting him.

On her return, to my slight displeasure, she showed everyone all the pictures of Baxter on her iPhone. 'There's Baxter fighting my Bag for Life,' she said, holding up a minuscule screen showing a blurry hessian handle. 'And here's Baxter fighting my shoelaces... and here's Baxter...' I couldn't bear any more so I went to my basket for a sulk while Mr Dawnay made his joke about how he's got a Bag for Life too (in the shape of the ed in chief).

I think the thing is this. I am quite happy and prepared to love Baxter. I am preparing to make my godmotherly vows, and keep them, too. But I want to be the only one in the Dawnay family who does.
