Coco's corner

Written by Coco
Dear Readers,

When I was talking about milestone birthdays and anniversaries the other day, I deliberately left one out. This one is a bit of a massive birthday – well, it is as far as I'm concerned. Yes. The middle pup – the one who kneels to stroke me and croons into my ear that I am 'her sister' and 'the puppy princess' – is going to turn 18 about the time you are reading this. This makes me a bit sad.

What this means is that two pups in the litter are now officially adult and could flee the nest... and then I will be left, eventually, on my own with Mr Dawnay, and the ed in chief, which is not a pretty prospect.

I have cheered myself up by reminding myself that age is just a number, and in practice, the middle pup turning 18 changes nothing: like all the pups, she still expects to have meals provided, money handed over for Oyster cards, smartphone contracts paid for, driving lessons arranged, doctor appointments ditto, laundry done and room tidied by others.

What does change when they hit 18 is that they also expect to be able to go out all night. They regard family holidays – apart from luxury beach ones – as optional. They see it as their right to refuse to do things like go to the British Museum if they don't feel like it (have you ever known a child actually 'feel like' going to a museum to see an improving exhibition about the history of the Hajj?).

So in a sense, for the next year or so, life will go on as normal. A child may become an adult, from one month to the next. But that still doesn't make her a grown-up.
