FIRST IMPRESSIONS: LEE INGLEBY

…is a British actor. He is best known for his role as DS John Bacchus in BBC drama Inspector George Gently, & is the voice of Bob in the new Bob The Builder series. In film, he has appeared in Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban & Master & Comma

What are you working on at the moment?
I’m about to start filming a 10-part TV drama but I’m not allowed to talk about it as it hasn’t been announced yet.

When are you at your happiest?
When I’m working. I love working. Also when I’m travelling. If I’m not doing one I always try to do the other.

What is your greatest fear?
The effects of Alzheimer’s on those I love.

What is your earliest memory?
When I was baking with my grandma in a kitchen in Yorkshire. She used to bake Parkin [gingerbread cake] and gingerbread biscuits for everyone and I remember those. I used to spend a lot of time with my grandma.

What do you most dislike about yourself?
I think I’m indecisive. If I’m given too much choice I never quite know which way to go. Also I don’t like the fact that I can’t play the piano.

Who has been your greatest influence?
My drama teacher at school, Brian Wellock. Without him I wouldn’t have become an actor. He made me realise that acting was something I could do.

What is your most treasured possession?
My 20-year-old Mini Cooper. I still think they look cool. Mine’s black with a cream-white top.

What trait do you most deplore in others?
A lack of empathy.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
I always wished I was a bit taller, a bit bulkier and a bit hairier.

What is your favourite book?
The Twits by Roald Dahl. It was the first book I ever read on my own and I still have it.

What is your favourite film?
Amadeus: I love the music, I love the cinematography, and I love the acting. It’s one of the films that made me want to become an actor.

And your favourite record or piece of music?

That is difficult. I think my choice would change every day.

What is your favourite meal?
My mum’s steak and kidney pie.

Who would you most like to come to dinner?
Laurel and Hardy, Lord Nelson, George Harrison and Superman. I think that would be a bit of a lad’s dinner. Maybe a night out.

What is the nastiest thing someone has ever said to you?
My maths teacher at school announced in front of the whole class that I was thick and because I was thick I wouldn’t amount to anything. I still remember that to this day. A horrible thing to say, I think, to a young lad. It really did affect me. It knocked my confidence. I’d love to stick two fingers up at him!

What is your secret vice?
I love buying vinyl records but I’ve got too many and storage space is beginning to diminish.

Do you write thank-you notes?
I do, whenever I can. I think they’re nice to receive.

Which phrase do you most overuse?
‘Do you know what I mean?’

Do you believe in aliens?
I wouldn’t rule it out.

What would improve the quality of your life?
An extra day at the weekend would be nice.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I love cooking. I’m always in the kitchen. I like to experiment but I think my desired outcome isn’t always guaranteed.

What would you like your epitaph to read?
‘Here lies the Academy Award winner, Lee Ingleby’.

Inspector George Gently returns to BBC One on Wednesday 29 April.
