WACKY DOG KNITS

For the doggie who has everything, Alison Jenkins has produced these adorable outfits for occasions when fur simply won’t do…

Personality, style, poise, charm, good looks – you’ve either got them or you haven’t. Ask 100 dog owners to describe their best friend and you’ll be sure to get 100 different replies. Each one of them is an individual, with his or her own character traits and funny little habits – just like the rest of us.

These individual examples of canine couture for stylish dogs are designed with ease in mind, for beginners to practised knitters. I know that all the dogs enjoyed modelling my creations, now it’s just up to you to decide which look would best suit the pooch in your life.

Patterns for these and more lovely doggy knits are available from Wacky Doggy Knits by Alison Jenkins, £7.99. Published by Ivy Press, 210 High Street, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2NS: 01273-487440, www.ivypress.co.uk

PREPPY CARDIGAN

A real American classic; this slouchy cardi looks just the thing for those chilly spring evenings. It has a knitted shield on the back, bearing a monogram, for that personal touch. It’s particularly popular with Labradors and retrievers; we’ve even caught the odd Weimaraner stealing an envious glance

BUZZY BEE

Buzz, buzz, buzz: this cuddly bee outfit is particularly lovely for small dogs. It is easily and quickly knitted up in a fabulous shaggy style that perfectly emulates the fluffiness of real bees. A tiny hat with pipe-cleaner antennae tops it off, plus some fabulous wings.

FRENCH COUTURE

Ooh la la! Think pink. Who can resist this neat jacket with dark bindings, an homage to the great fashion designer Coco Chanel. The cute beret is an absolute must as a finishing touch. Why not add a pearlembellished collar and leash for authenticity.

SUNFLOWER

This outfit never fails to raise a smile. Our model looks absolutely delighted to be a sunflower – just look at his great big grin! The sleeveless stripy vest and headband are worked in rib throughout so are comfortable and easy to wear. And don’t worry, the petals are stiffened with very thick fluffy pipe cleaners, so they won’t hurt your dog’s face at all.

FROGGY FASHION

Our Jack Russell terrier was the perfect choice for this outfit. Silky yarn and rib stitch make the outfit stretchy and close-fitting. And the froggy eyes are nice lightweight polyester so he won’t get a headache.

BELLBOY

‘Ding, Ding!’ Some doggies just love to be busy, and why not encourage them with this irresistible jacket and hat combo. Naturally it has to be red, with gold tassels and trimmings, of course.
