January sales

Your guide to getting the very most from the sale season

Written by Cassandra Snow
January is here and so it is perfectly natural to feel like a bit of a fresh start. For many of us this starts with an optimistic gym membership and a dose of kale or two. It is also the time where we venture into the manic January sales to obtain some attire for the challenging cold months ahead. However, many of us will also still have a few items on hangers from last years sales, their discounted tags tucked away inside their collars; we got seduced by the price but it failed to strike the same kind of inspiration to actually wear it. To help you do things differently this year and really get what you want from the sales, read on and discover my top, tried and tested, tips:

1. Like a juice cleanse in a healthy diet- cleanse your wardrobe!
Start by clearing out your wardrobe. Things that don’t fit you or suit you only serve to take up space for items that make you feel and look incredible. We don’t always get it right, sometimes this is harder to accept if it was more of an investment purchase too, but holding on to it will only add to your remorse.

2. Make a list.
Whether it be a quick note on your smart phone, scribbled on a piece of paper or simply memorised, make sure you have a list of what you are looking for. For example do you have a go to daily handbag? Do you have a classic pencil skirt that would go with all of those blouses that you haven’t had anything to go with for years? Put your ideas on a list, that way you will remain focused on what you really want out of your shopping trip.

3. Assess the space
Whilst this sounds rather serious, once you walk over the threshold of a store, take a quiet moment to look at how the store is laid out. You can sometimes feel caught up in the tussle and stress of a sale, as once immaculately merchandised shop floors turn into a disarrayed jungle of panic buying. However it can take a great deal of disorientation out of shopping experience just to be more aware of your surroundings.

4. If the cap fits- Buy it!
Or quite simply if something isn’t your size or doesn’t fit you, then don’t buy it. It will be a negative item to have hanging in your wardrobe as it’s neither complimenting nor flattering the person that you are present day.

5. Use your instinct
It’s great to have fun and experiment with new styles, don’t be scared to try new looks, however when you try something on, use your instinct. You generally have a pretty quick gut feeling if something doesn’t suit you. If this extends to an unsure feeling about the item and this mental tussle lasts more than 10 minutes, walk away from it. Only buy things that you have an instant great feeling about.

6. The full price rule
Many have fallen prey to the allure of a great deal, however before you reach for your purse, ask yourself this: Would you pay full price for it? If the answer is no, then chances are that you might not be that crazy about it and more enticed by the price.
