HOME REMEDY: Rose hips

Written by Sof McVeigh
I enjoyed seeing rose hips  being collected on the programme Wartime Farm, with one man saying that as children they were paid to gather them during the war for their high vitamin C content.

Not only are they full of vitamin C, but research has shown they possess antiinflammatory properties, which may be beneficial for joint pain. Two recent Scandinavian studies show a significant percentage of people reported reduced pain in chronic joint conditions following a course of rose hip supplements.

This year, due to so little sun and a lot of rain, the rose hips have flourished. And making a rose-hip syrup is super easy and only a small bowl of hips produces a bottle that will see you through the winter.

Cover them with water, bring to the boil, then leave simmering for half an hour, periodically mashing them with a fork to release all their goodness, and topping up the water. Then drain through a sieve lined with muslin, squeezing out all the juice. Add sugar to this juice and heat again to dissolve it. Add citric acid so it will last longer.
