HOME REMEDY: Fatty acids

Written by Sof McVeigh
Last week I wrote about essential fatty acids and how important they are for every cell in the body and particularly for arthritis, coronary heart disease, PMT, bone loss in menopausal women and healthy brain development in children.

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid (polyunsaturated fat) that is found in oily fish, such as mackerel and herring, as well as many seed oils – flax, (linseed) hemp and rape, walnut oil and evening primrose oil.

The best way to make sure you get enough is to eat two portions of oily fi sh a week or to pour 1 tbsp of seed oil over your food before you eat. Flaxseed oil has a delicious nutty taste, but don’t cook with it as the heat destroys any benefits.

Flax seeds contain very large amount of lignans, which act as antioxidants and may be beneficial for some cancers. Make sure it has not been exposed to heat, light or oxygen as this causes rancid oil and all health benefits are lost.

Likewise with fish oil – get a good quality one as it’s all down to the conversion and distillation process that makes the fatty acids useable.
