HOME REMEDY: Acne

Written by Sof McVeigh
A while ago I mentioned a study on thyme and its action on the bacteria that contributes to acne. Several of you got in touch and wanted to know more – but as the study is still in the lab and not yet tested on skin, here are some other ideas that may help.

Acne is often linked to hormones, but things can be done to lessen the impact when the oil glands go into overdrive. Nutritionist Michael Murray recommends – among other things – flaxseed oil (flax flowers, left) and chromium. The latter is a trace mineral that helps insulin do its job properly and control blood sugar levels. Too much sugar creates an acidic environment in the body, when we need a balanced or slightly alkaline environment to function optimally – all refined sugar needs to be cut when trying to combat acne. Flaxseed oil is full of beneficial omegas and is a 'good fat' and will not make your skin more oily. Supplements of zinc are great for most skin-related issues, though you should not take these for too long. Natural sources of zinc are oysters and seeds (especially pumpkin), pulses and ginger.
