HOME REMEDY: Olympics

Written by Sof McVeigh
'Tis the season for sprains and strains. Having just finished seeing the trainers at Wimbledon diagnose a problem then treat it in only three minutes, it is now time for the Olympic physios and their ilk to do their bit.

I asked my physio what is the point of a sports massage while the players are mid-game – she said when your body is working flat out it needs a hand to process all the chemicals and move them on their way – lactic acid for one. She describes the muscle fibres like a herringbone pattern that afterwards may need help to smooth back into shape – hence stretching after exercise. Often pain peaks 24 hours after extreme exercise – no one is certain why this is, possibly it's an inflammatory response, as the body seeks to repair the muscle cells. At this point, all agree that ice and stretching are crucial.

Top-class sportsmen and women really do put their bodies through the mill and need a full team of helpers to pick up the pieces when it all goes pear-shaped. For us mere mortals, gazing up at Mount Olympia, stretching, ice and arnica will do.
