HOME REMEDY: Feverfew

Written by Melonie
This pretty daisy-like plant is in full bloom now, and will keep on coming if you cut it back. It is hardy and easy to grow – so easy that it may well take over your garden.

Despite its name, it has hardly ever been used as an anti-fever remedy. Its true benefits are two-fold.

First, it's been used for headaches and vertigo since Elizabethan times. This property was tested widely in the 1970s, when it was found to have particular benefits for migraine sufferers, reducing their symptoms by up to 70 per cent.

If you want to try your own home remedy for this, it is the leaves that are of benefit – although as they are very bitter you will need to eat them in a bread sandwich and only three to five are needed. And be careful as they can cause mouth ulcers. The herb was also found to aid sleep and reduce the pain of arthritis.

The second benefit of feverfew is as a fly and moth repellent – place sachets of the dried leaves in your wardrobe to prevent moths, or hang bunches in your kitchen to deter any flies.
