HOME REMEDY: Yarrow

Written by Sof McVeigh
Now is the time to pick this beautiful plant as the flowers are in full bloom – probably rather later this year than usual. It is the flower heads that are used in any home remedy, though please be careful when picking them as the sap can cause photosensitivity on some skin. Yarrow has many qualities from antiseptic, antiinflammatory and haemostatic (blood-stopping), right through to its astringent and drying actions. Used externally you can imagine that it has a good effect on wounds and sores and has also been known to help with varicose veins and haemorrhoids. Though a word of caution due to its effect on the blood – do not use when pregnant.

As a skin toner it is wonderful to dry out oily skin, tighten pores and tone the skin. Lavender and sage can be added to this toner.

Yarrow flowers are good to make a tincture with – this is when you soak the flowers in alcohol and leave in the sun for 2 to 3 days, then in the dark for a week or so, shaking every few days. The essential oil of the flowers is also good to use in skin complaints.
