Looking after mature hair

Working with your colour
When it comes to mature hair, there's no one fixed definition of 'grey' hair, 'it is white hair that gives the illusion of grey hair, as the white is mixed with the natural hair shade,' states Tracey. This results in many different shades of grey, 'we regularly see women come in with a variety of shades of hair from silver, white, sterling and salt and pepper grey," says Tracey.

According to the experts, the trick to glamorous grey is quite simply, working with what you've got. 'With lighter, white hair it's best to enhance it with a soft toner, rather than a permanent colour,' Tracey advises. 'A toner keeps the hair natural and healthy while giving it a little bit of a boost,' she adds.

For women who have more salt and pepper hair, Tracey advises to work with the colour rather than use block colour. Semi-permanent colouring is the best way to enhance your hair colour for a natural look - choose a colour very close to your own natural shade to be blended in with the grey.

More mature hair colour can also take on a more yellow cast over time, Tracey suggests washing your hair with a purple toning shampoo to keep your natural silver hues bright.

Shine like Silver
'Grey, more mature hair can tend to be drier and has a tendency to frizz more and look dull, so it's key to boost the moisture in your hair and the best way to do this is to use moisturising products,' Tracey says. Opt for nourishing shampoo and conditioners that will help hydrate your hair and keep it looking glossy. For even more lustre Tracey suggests using a shine spray such as ASP Kitoko Shine Sensation to add a mirror like shine which has great anti-frizz properties as well.

Beyond hair colour
Whatever shade of grey you are embracing this season, it's essential to adapt your make up and wardrobe to work in harmony with your hair colour. Opt for clothes in silver, charcoal and grey tones which will highlight grey hair and make it even more striking, recommends Tracey. Brighter shades also work well, bright jewel tones such as ruby reds, emerald greens and sapphire blue will all work beautifully contrasted with grey hair.
