Don’t get into a flap – try some inspired fashion from a bygone time

By Katy Pearson

When Downton Abbey returns to our screens, the family – and their fashions – will be stepping out into the 1920s. And while the ladies of that era seem eminently more stylish than many of us modern women, those full-length gowns can’t have been the most practical of garments.

Avoid looking as if you’ve accidentally fallen out of a fancy-dress box by giving your wardrobe an elegant autumn edge with a few key elements. Think rich velvet, chic clutches, classic combs, drop waists and plenty of embellishments. Whether you’re a Lady Mary or a Dowager Countess, you’ll exude timeless style.

Downton Abbey returns to ITV1 on 16 September at 9pm

Daily tip from the lady archive

"BE careful with your mouth make-up. By careless work you may obliterate well-cut lines, and you will always achieve a badly groomed look if your lipstick is smudged and badly applied."

The Lady, Make-Up for Mouths, 8th January, 1942
