A nation of shopaholics?

We spend 18 days a year in shops, says new survey
Online shopping may be more popular than ever but a new survey has shown that the average Briton still spends more than 18 full days each year trudging around shops.

The poll conducted by money saving website Promotionalcodes.org.uk asked 1,000 respondents how long they spend shopping for items including groceries, clothes and shoes, health and beauty, entertainment and gifts. The supermarket was the number one shopping destination with each of us spending an average of two and a half hours each week shopping for food. The time includes a big weekly shop and popping into the supermarket for one off purchases and fresh items. However those who bought their groceries online said it took just 14 minutes to complete the main shop.

Clothes and shoe shopping on the High Street took an average of two hours a week with fussy fashionista’s prepared to shop around to find the perfect look. Shopping for health and beauty items took an average of 45 minutes a week. These purchases included necessary items like razors, medicines and personal hygiene along with luxuries including expensive skin care products, designer make-up and perfumes. Thirty minutes was spent on entertainment such as books, films and music. And a further 20 minutes a week was spent buying cards and presents.

A spokesman for PromotionalCodes.org.uk, said: "Britons love to shop, or at least browse around the shops. It seems to be a weekend hobby for a lot of people."
