Sweets Made Simple

This new show is jampacked with a little bit of what you fancy
Ben-Felsenberg-176‘I’m a strong believer in a little bit of what you fancy does you good,’ declares a minxy blonde as an impassioned article of faith. Beside her a happy gentleman sporting a set of whiskers befitting a Royalist cavalier, joyfully gorges on a mountain of treats. They are Kitty Hope and Mark Greenwood, who from their seaside base in Whitstable are stealthily reaching out across the more elegant parts of London with their confectionery concoctions. Now the duo boast their own television show, Sweets Made Simple (BBC Two, Friday, 8.30pm), and it’s jam-packed with delights to seduce anyone who spent their childhood gazing longingly at the jars of sweets in the local shop. Their recipes are clearly spelt out, but challenging enough to give a sense of fulfilment should you take on the ambitious items.

While Greenwood is the strong and mostly silent support, it’s very much Kitty Hope’s show. Who else would label English almond butter toffee as not only ‘butch’ but also the ‘George Clooney’ of toffees? An exotic twist finds expression in their creations – hence the sublime decadence of the gin and lime truffle, and the ridiculous but irresistible indulgence that is the popcorn espresso macchiato ball. But the duo is well versed in the tradition and delicate arts of their trade – behold the precision required for the milk and white chocolate seashell caramel. Do stagger out making their recipes over a number of afternoons and you might just avoid wolfing everything down at once.
